GIVING A HAND-UP NOT JUST A HANDOUT

Handouts are easy - give a few bags of groceries and you may feel momentarily accomplished - but the cycle continues. We believe that in order to break that cycle, we must invest much deeper than just felt needs. We must help others to love God, love each other, and love themselves. Our belief is that God desires to do much more than feed a hungry belly - He desires to truly change the world.

Our Story

OUR STORY

Good Samaritan Ministries is a Nazarene Compassionate Ministry that was birthed through the concerns and prayers of the Good Samaritan Church of the Nazarene in Collinsville, IL. It was the desire of a few people that the church would be active in serving the people in the surrounding communities.Good Samaritan started with a few "good deed" projects - but God, as He does, had much larger plans. Within a few years the ministry was presented with the opportunity to establish a compassionate ministry center in a run-down home right in the heart of Washington Park. This community desperately needed a beacon of hope. The response to the worship services and food resources was overwhelming from the get-go, and within a few short months - Good Samaritan Ministries was outgrowing the house and struggling to keep up with the needs.Since then, GSM has opened a 6,000 square foot ministry center just two-houses down from the original location. There people worship together, fellowship together, and have access to laundry facilities, showers, and grocery resources.While meeting those sort of felt needs was good - it was only a band-aid over the problems GSM was encountering. Issues of employment, education, and parenting seemed to be keeping people in a cycle that they could not break free from. In 2010, GSM hired Jo Ann Baker as their ministry director. Since then GSM has expanded its programming to include tutoring programs for kids, educational programs for young adults seeking to better their lives, and the MaD Outreach to help better equip young parents for the challenges they face. Through it all, lives are being impacted, the kingdom of God made real, and a community is beginning to sense the hope that is offered through life in Christ.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is simple we exist to help those in need by befriending them and pointing them to their true hope in Christ their Savior. How we carry out that mission has taken on many forms. Compassionate ministries has many needs that it seeks to fill. Felt needs like hunger, housing, and finances are genuine, but often mask the deeper emotional and spiritual needs of individuals and communities.Our desire is to not just give a hand-out to meet the felt needs, but to give a hand-up that leads to the healing of those deeper needs. That healing comes first and foremost through Christ, but is made real through His people investing their lives in helping each other. By developing meaningful relationships with people, we can better understand their needs and equip them to meet those needs. As a result, we not only give out groceries and help pay bills, but now also tutor children, counsel and train young parents, and help young adults develop the skills necessary to succeed. The end result is not just a better person, but an entire community that is redeemed.

Our Week

OUR WEEK

So here's where the proverbial rubber meets the road - how our history and our mission are made real. In short, here's what a typical week in the life of Good Samaritan Ministries looks like:Tuesday & ThursdayOnce the school day ends - our work begins. Each Tuesday and Thursday our Kingdom Club helps kids with homework, runs reading groups, and always include a fun activity. On Wednesdays we include an AWANA's program. Help is always needed and welcome.WednesdaysMoms and Dads Outreach (MaD) meets from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM and provides a time of Bible study and fellowship for young parents, pregnancy counseling, and baby resources. Volunteers and supplies are always needed.SaturdaysOn Saturdays our priority is worship and evangelism. The doors open at 10:30 AM and attenders have free laundry facilities available to them. From 11:15 Am to Noon, we spend time in worship and hearing the Word of God. Then at noon we eat lunch together before making grocery resources available for families in need. And here is the best part - EVERYTHING - including lunch, resources, worship, and preaching is provided and prepared by volunteer groups.

Volunteer Opportunities There is no shortage of ways you can volunteer with Good Samaritan Ministries. From being a regular helper in one of our weekly programs (Kingdom Club, MaD, Next Step), to helping staff our Saturday activities (kitchen, resource room, set-up, clean-up) - if you have the desire to serve, we have the area for you. We also work connecting groups with projects in and around the center. If you are a pastor or group leader looking for a great project, or just an individual looking for a place to serve - we need you at GSM. Donating ResourcesEvery week we provide grocery and toiletry resources to nearly 100 people. This includes staple food products like bread, canned goods, and meats; along with personal care products. Needless to say, keeping the shelves stocked is a never-ending task. Collecting these resources for donation is a great project for groups of all kinds, and is a great way to help support Good Samaritan Ministries.We generally accept all canned-goods and non-perishable food items as well as personal care products and toiletries. Of course, we usually have greater need for some items, so please contact us to learn more about the immediate needs.

GSM is funded 100% through charitable donations. The funds that come in go to maintain and operate our Washington Park outreach center, purchase additional resources to be distributed, and to fund our weekly outreach and training programs. NEXT STEP

MENTORING PROGRAM

GSM's primary purpose is to provide a "hand-up" rather than just a "hand-out". The very essence of that phrase requires reaching-out and holding on until a person is able to stand under their own strength. The NEXT STEP program is geared towards helping young men and women develop the strengths they need to stand.

In today's market and economy, employment is hard to come by. That is even more true if you find yourself without a high school diploma and lacking experience in basic job skills. This new program helps young men and women pursue their GED, as well as develop some of the basic skills they will need in order to be successful in the modern job market.

This includes development of basic computer skills, help in creating resumes, interviewing, and other basic business skills.

If you are an educator, knowledgeable in business and/or technology, or just love building transformational relationships - then we need you! NEXT STEP is a new ministry area that we are growing as the need arises, and we are excited to see what God does through this new adventure.

MaD

MOM & DAD OUTREACH

There is no doubt that the family unit struggles to survive. We live in a culture with a divorce rate that soars above 60% and more and more children are being raised in single family homes. Here at GSM we believe in and do all we can to support and uplift parents in their struggles to survive.

The MaD Outreach provides a support and training community for young mothers and fathers in their quest to raise children. This support comes in varied forms, starting with pregnancy counseling and resourcing for young mothers, counseling and training for both mothers and fathers, as well as a great time of group Bible Study.

MaD Outreach currently meets every Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM at our Washington Park Center.

If you are an interested in helping mothers and fathers develop the skills they need to survive as parents, then we need you! This great ministry area is growing - so be sure to get involved!

Saturdays

WORSHIP

SATURDAY MORNINGS

Our Saturday Morning Worshp Service is where Good Samaritan Ministries got it's start. Every week we gather together for a time a fellowship, worship, and listening to the Word of God. Prior to the service, our free laundry and shower facilities are available. After the service, we enjoy lunch together before handing out our grocery and toiletry resources.Each week is staffed by a different group of vounteers - usually provided by one of the many churches that partner with GSM. Without them, none of this would be possible.The doors open at 10:30 AM every Saturday and the center remains open until 2:00 PM for those needing to finish up their laundry.Our Saturday services provide a great opportunity for individuals, families, and/or groups to volunteer.

Jesus cherished children. His example is one try to model here at GSM. We believe that if we can helpd kids develop the skills they need to succeed in school, it benefits them and their families for generations to come. It is that sort of transformation that makes our minstry to children a vital part of our ministry plan. We believe they have the ability to truly change their community.

Kindom Club is just one of the exciting programs offered through Good Samaritan Ministries. This interactive program is aimed at helping children improve their academic performance and develop skills to help them excell in life. Including tutoring, reading programs, art, and other great activities - this is a great area to get involved in - and we need people to get involved! If you are a teacher, a mentor, or just love children - then we have need of your skills! Just imagine the impact you could have on the life of some young child - and trust us when we tell you that they will definitely have an impact on you.
